Peter Wentz Farmstead’s Civil War Weekend
Sunday, October 3, 2021
On October 2 and 3, the Peter Wentz Farmstead welcomes Battery F, 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery to the farm. This group represents the individuals who fought in the Artillery branch of the U.S. Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The Battery will be conducting firing demonstrations of their 10 Pounder Parrot Rifled Cannon throughout the weekend as well as exhibiting how the typical soldier camped, ate, and entertained themselves in the field. The Battery will focus especially on members of the pacifist Schwenkfelder faith who broke norms to serve in the war.
The United States Sanitary Commission will be present to show how this agency aided the war effort, with a focus on women’s roles in the organization. We will have a living historian explaining the role of women who secretly enlisted in the army and often served honorably until their identities were discovered.
This won’t be the first time the Peter Wentz Farmstead has welcomed soldiers to the property. Battery F will be visiting us on the exact date that George Washington and his troops camped here in 1777. Take a tour of our historic house to learn more about the Wentzes’ experience with a military encampment nearly a hundred years before the Civil War. Tours run on the hour and must be reserved in advance. Call us at 610-584-5104 to reserve your tour. Tour groups must be less than 10 people.
In accordance with county policy, masks must be worn at all times while on the property.
