LANSDALE, PA—What did it feel like to have General George Washington live in your home?
You don’t have to go back in time to find the answer. This fall, “From Home to Headquarters: Washington in Worcester” returns for its annual exhibit at the Peter Wentz Farmstead in Lansdale. The exhibit, which runs from Sept. 29 through Nov. 19, will show visitors how Peter Wentz Farmstead was transformed from a family home to the military headquarters of General George Washington in October 1777, during the Civil War.
The exhibit will feature a detailed recreation of the first-floor rooms used by Washington and his military staff at the Farmstead to run the Continental Army during his stay. Guests will also learn about the troops’ movements in Montgomery County as part of the Philadelphia Campaign and the effects their presence had on residents like the Wentz family.
In addition to this historic recreation, visitors are welcome to go on a self-guided tour of “Washington’s Indispensable Men,” located at the Peter Wentz Farmstead Visitors Center and available at any time during regular hours.
“Washington wasn’t the only notable visitor at the Wentz house in October of 1777," said Carly Schmidt, museum educator at the Peter Wentz Farmstead. “Alexander Hamilton, John Laurens, Tench Tilghman, and Robert Hanson Harrison were here as well—taking dictation for letters and orders, analyzing reports, and performing other necessary administrative tasks.”
Admission to both the “From Home to Headquarters” and “Washington’s Indispensable Men” exhibits are included in our regular tours, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Peter Wentz Farmstead is located at 2030 Shearer Road, Lansdale, PA 19446.

The event is open to all ages. No registration is required. Visitors are asked to follow current County COVID-19 guidelines.

ABOUT PETER WENTZ FARMSTEAD
Peter Wentz Farmstead is a restored 18th century Pennsylvania German historic site, which is owned and operated by Montgomery County and receives support from the Peter Wentz Farmstead Society. The site is regularly open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Guided tours are offered on the hour, with the last tour beginning at 3 p.m.
