Free Potassium Iodide Tablets to be Distributed on August 17, 2023

NORRISTOWN, PA – The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) is participating in the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Annual Free Potassium Iodide Distribution on August 17, 2023. MCOPH will provide free potassium iodide (KI) tablets to Montgomery residents who live, work, or attend schools within a 10-mile radius of the Limerick Generating Station, on Thursday, August 17, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Distribution will be located at both the Pottstown Health Center, 364 King Street, Pottstown, PA, and the Limerick Fire Station, 390 W Ridge Pike, Royersford, PA. If you pre-ordered using the online form, KI tablet pick-up is at the Pottstown Health Center only. Otherwise, residents are welcome to walk-in at both sites.

Montgomery County continues to make available free potassium iodide tablets (KI) to Montgomery County residents who live, work and/or attend schools within a 10-mile radius of the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant as part of ongoing emergency preparedness efforts.

Potassium iodide, or KI, can help protect the thyroid gland against harmful radioactive iodine when taken as directed during radiological emergencies. Individuals should only take KI when told to do so by state health officials or the governor.

Adults and children will each receive a two-day supply of KI. Directions detailing when and how to take the tablets, as well as proper storage instructions, are provided with the KI tablets. Residents can pick up KI tablets for other families or those who are unable to pick them up on their own, but a separate request form must be filled out with their information. To make this process easier, complete and submit the online KI Form by August 15, 2023.

Unlike families, businesses are given a one-day supply of KI for each of their employees. Businesses with over 100 employees should call the Pottstown Health Center (610-970-5040) to provide information about the number of employees and to schedule a pick up time for their KI tablets. To expedite the process, businesses can also complete and submit the online KI Form by August 15, 2023.

Anyone can take the tablets as long as they are not allergic to iodine. They are safe for pregnant people, people who are breastfeeding, people on thyroid medicine, and children and infants. Individuals who are unsure if they should take KI should contact their healthcare provider. KI tablets are not provided for pets. Contact your veterinarian for information.

KI tablets can also be obtained from MCOPH throughout the year. KI tablets can be picked up daily, Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm, at the Pottstown Health Center, 364 King Street, Pottstown, PA. Residents can also call Pottstown Health Center's phone number (610-970-5040) anytime of the year to ask about the KI tablets. Residents and businesses can also request KI tablets using the online form throughout the year. MCOPH will contact you when your KI request is ready for pick-up at the Pottstown Health Center.
