Swamp Pike Bridge in New Hanover Township Reopens Ahead of Schedule

Bridge 166 Swamp Pike Complete

NORRISTOWN, PA – Montgomery County Roads and Bridges Department announced today that the Swamp Pike Bridge in New Hanover Township has reopened approximately one month ahead of schedule.

The original bridge located at the New Hanover Square Road end of Swamp Pike was demolished and re-constructed using the latest engineering technology. The County also worked in association with the utility owners to upgrade the underground water and gas utilities as part of this project.

The bridge was closed earlier this year on July 5, 2022, to begin construction and it was estimated to open in late November 2022, however construction was completed early.

The Swamp Pike bridge was built in 1827 and includes two spans, 33 feet long with 1,155 square feet of deck area above the Swamp Creek.

This project is funded by the Montgomery County Motor Vehicle Fund. Since 2017, the County has cut its inventory of poor condition bridges in half by using these funds to fix its critical infrastructure. To date, 30 bridges have been repaired or replaced and 25 poor condition bridges are currently in the design and engineering phase to prepare for reconstruction. The County anticipates being able to fix all remaining poor condition bridges by 2027.
