Recording Veterans Discharge Paperwork
Per Pennsylvania Statute of 1868, Act 37, the Recorder of Deeds office is authorized to record military discharge papers of all veterans, commonly known as form DD214 and NGB22.
Montgomery County veterans should record their discharge paperwork with the Recorder of Deeds office to safeguard these important documents in the case of loss, damage or natural disaster of the original document. The Recorder of Deeds will retain an image of the veteran’s DD214 in perpetuity on our secure database. Only the veteran, immediate family member, authorized agent by written request, or the director of the department of veterans' affairs can request copies of these documents.
If you are eligible by statute to request military discharge documents, please fill out this form and return it to our office. Please note, military discharges are not available for public searches until 75 years after the recorded date.
Montgomery County veterans should bring their DD214 (military discharge papers) and a photo identification card (such as a Pennsylvania Drivers’ License) with them to record their discharge papers either to the office in Norristown or at one of our mobile events. There is no fee to record military discharge papers.
If you would like to host a mobile veterans’ identification event please contact us.
Montgomery County Veterans can request a copy of their DD214 from our office by filling out this form. Please note that we will only have a copy of your military discharge papers if you have directly recorded them with our office. We recommend you reach out to our office at 610-278-3289 to confirm we have your records on file before submitting the form.
Veterans' Discount ID Card*
The Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds encourages all veterans to record their DD214s for safekeeping, and provides Montgomery County veterans with a photo ID card and a corresponding program to receive discounts for goods and services from participating merchants. Veterans will be able to present these cards to businesses throughout our region that have agreed to provide a discount to Montgomery County veterans in appreciation for the veterans’ service to our country.
All veterans who visit the Recorder’s Office to record their DD214 (military discharge papers) and obtain their photo ID will be given a list of participating businesses.

Participating merchants are separate and independent entities from the Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds Office. Such merchants provide discounts on goods and services on a voluntary basis, and will not necessarily self-identify as being part of the Montgomery County Veterans’ Discount ID program. Although participating merchants are asked by the Recorder of Deeds to give 30-days written notice if they would like to withdrawal from the program, and every effort is made to keep this list current, the Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds Office cannot warrant or guarantee that the merchants will provide the discounts.
