About

MontcoWorks along with manufacturers, educators, and partner agencies is raising awareness to show the future workforce how important manufacturing is to the economy in the SE region. We hope to clear away misperceptions and highlight the many opportunities for advancement and good wages that are available in the Manufacturing Industry in Montgomery County.

During the past 5 years, we have seen the manufacturing sector struggle to find employees for various positions. How can we continuously develop a future pipeline of talent? How do we get the next generation with talents in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math excited about Manufacturing.

Activities such as ManuFest, Industry Tours, Industry Forums, and Dream It Do It (DIDI) – What’s So Cool About Manufacturing? Video Contests are part of the Business Education Partnership activities led by MontcoWorks, intended to encourage and educate students, parents, and educators about the Manufacturing sector.

Background

The Dream It Do It, PA (DIDI) website is the platform designed to provide resources and showcase the career opportunities available in manufacturing to Pennsylvania students. In 2013, a workforce development project called “Lehigh Valley Skill Up” intended to raise awareness of manufacturing in the Lehigh Valley area. The popularity of the student video contests in Pennsylvania has expanded to 11 additional states.

WSCM Image 2.jpgCreated by Manufacturers Resource Center (MRC) and shared through the Dream It Do It platform, the WSCM program is a media educational tool designed to provide awareness of career paths in manufacturing. The 2013 video contest was sponsored by the Manufacturers Resource Center, Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, the Lehigh Valley Workforce Investment Board, and the DaVinci Science Center.

Under the partnership of Manufacturing Alliance of Philadelphia (MAP), Montgomery County Workforce Development (MontcoWorks), and Bucks County Workforce Development, WSCM Philadelphia launched its first contest on October 2016.

Contest

For the WSCM Video Contest, middle school students will use the Go-Pro camera to create 2 ½ -minutes videos featuring local manufacturing facilities. Students will interview three different staff, document their experiences and present them in an educational and “cool” way through videos. The videos will be reviewed by a panel of judges for awards in different categories. Online votes will then be cast through WSCM, a website for the “Viewers” Choice award. This contest is also promoted throughout the region by PBS39.
