The right to keep and bear arms is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution as well as the Pennsylvania Constitution. Along with this right comes the awesome responsibility of gun owners to use and store their firearms in a safe and responsible manner. We at the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office are committed to accomplishing this through our Firearms Safety and Awareness Seminars that we hold throughout the year.
Firearms Safety & Awareness Seminars
Our FREE Firearms Safety & Awareness Seminars help teach our residents about the laws and responsibilities that accompany gun ownership, and how to operate weapons safely. Classes are held at various locations throughout the county and are limited to 25 participants. You must be a resident of Montgomery County and 18 years old to register. Check this page, and our Facebook and Twitter
Each class includes:
- A review of Pennsylvania firearms laws, the Castle Doctrine, and liabilities issues.
- Instruction from a certified law enforcement firearms instructor on how to safely handle and clean firearms; how to choose the right weapon and holster; and basic shooting fundamentals.
Participants must be 18 years of age and a Montgomery County resident. No live firearms are permitted.
Top Ten Firearms Safety Tips
- Store firearms in a locked cabinet, safe, gun vault or storage case when not in use.
- Firearms should be unloaded when not in use.
- Store ammunition in a locked location separate from firearms.
- Use a gun locking device that renders the firearm inoperable when not in use.
- Educate everyone in your home about firearms safety. Kids can sign our "Child's Pledge of Gun Safety" to remind them not to touch a gun and to tell an adult if they find one.
- Know how your firearm operates.
- Anytime you pick up a firearm, keep your finger off of the trigger, point the muzzle in a safe direction, open the action and check both visually and physically to see that it is unloaded before handling it.
- Keep your finger off of the trigger until you have made a conscious decision to fire the weapon.
- Be sure the firearm is in safe operating condition and the ammunition is right for the weapon.
- Be sure the gun barrel is clear of obstruction before shooting.
