The Bike Patrol Unit serves as part of the Emergency Response Team and helps to enhance public safety around the Montgomery County Justice Complex, the Norristown Transportation Center, the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, local parks and trails, and assists with large event crowds and patrol. Bike Patrol Unit members must complete the International Police Mountain Bike Association Training which requires a written exam, 32 hours of bike training, riding up and down steps, emergency stop, a 40-mile bike ride, and riding through various obstacle courses. Unit members must also complete Bicycle Response Team Training, which includes formations, single-and double-column riding, arrest, rescue techniques, squad withdrawal and gas mask drills with smoke and noise.
